Superficial Changes

Since I was worried that the current archive and search pages were creating duplicate content issues in Google, I updated the website's design to the veryplaintxt 4.0 theme. Since the website was running an older version of veryplaintxt before, this should not seem that much different.
Unlike before, I will not be heavily modifying the theme [...]

Licensing Changes

After realizing that my issues with WordPress' autosave feature was probably caused by the fact it has been almost a year since I upgraded wpLicense, the WordPress plugin that integrates Creative Commons licenses, I decided that it was high time I looked at changing the license that my content is published under.
In December 2004, [...]

Moving to RimuHosting

On Saturday, just before going out, I purchased a VPS from New Zealand-based RimuHosting. A large part of the reason I decided to go with them was the testimonials from many of their customers about their amazing support, including praise from Ethan Zuckerman and Cheah Chu Yeow. My shortlist included Slicehost, but I decided against [...]

Plain Text Redesign

For a relatively long time (more than a year), this blog used a modified version of the Kubrick theme that ships with WordPress. Since I had invested a substantial amount hacking on the fixed-width theme to make it fluid[1], I was hesitant to switch, especially since the majority of the themes I saw were going [...]

Now Valid Atom 1.0

Using Ben de Groot's drop-in replacement for wp-atom.php, I quickly and simply updated this blog's Atom 0.3 feed to Atom 1.0. If this negatively affects you, let me know. Otherwise, rejoice!

Summary ➝ Full Text RSS

Annoyed at the fact that Technorati tags do not work when my posts are excerpted in RSS, I have switched back to full text in RSS.

Now Running WordPress 2.0.1

With the help of this excellent page listing the differences between WordPress 2.0 and WordPress 2.0.1, I have upgraded this blog to WordPress 2.0.1. It was relatively uneventful, so there is not much more to report.

Full Text ➝ Summary

In what is definitely the strangest way I have ever celebrated New Year's, I am changing the site's RSS feeds from full text to summary. If this causes a problem for anyone, let me know, and I will consider changing them back.

Upgrading to WordPress 2.0

Upgrading to WordPress 2.0 was not as crazy as I expected, thankfully.

ViewLevel and WordPress 2.0

If you have been wondering why certain protected posts just straight-up disappeared from this site and the RSS feed, the reason is that I started using the ViewLevel plugin to protect posts. Since I removed the passwords that were formerly protecting the posts, if anything happens to the plugin (i.e. it suddenly stops working), the [...]

Two Years Ago, Two Days Ago

The second anniversary!

Open (Registration) Season

Per my earlier thoughts about the possibility of private posts, I have decided to enable user registration. If I have never met you in person nor conversed with you past midnight, do not bother registering, unless you are really famous or something.
There are perhaps 50 people or so whom I would accept user registration from [...]

Spam, SevenTwentyFour Hours a Day

I respond to spam sent by the Internet company SEVENTwentyFour about a broken hyperlink that is not actually broken.

Title Change

This is Martey Dodoo speaking: This is Martey Dodoo is now MarteyDodoo.com.
Why now? What was wrong with the old title?
Nothing was wrong with it, per se (although my inner minimalist did think the "This is" was a bit superfluous). It's been a bit over six months since the last title change, and to tell the [...]

Away

There will be no posting here for a while, as I am moving. While the new house has working air conditioning (essential for these sultry Virginia nights), it does not currently have Internet access (the on-again, off-again access provided through the several wireless access points owned by my new neighbors do not count). Comments may [...]

Contact made. Email at will.

Mildly concerned about the fact that there was no way to contact me other than posting a comment, I created a contact page, using Matt Mullenweg's page as inspiration. Unlike Matt, I refrained from adding my cell phone number; I get enough strange messages as it is.

Migration Anniversary

One year ago today, I switched to WordPress from Movable Type. At the time, I was attracted by three things:

WordPress' GPL license seemed increasingly attractive as Six Apart, the company behind Movable Type (who currently owns LiveJournal) seemed to be constricting users' rights in order to increase revenue.
At the time of my switch, the version [...]

Upgraded to Wordpress 1.5.1

The RSS feeds are not working, but hopefully this post will fix it. I will probably have to make a comment to fix the comment feed. This is annoying, but life could be worse, I guess.
UPDATE: Uploaded a patch from the bug page previously linked to which should provide a more permanent solution.

Offline Feedback

Recently, a couple of readers have commented to me that they are unhappy with this blog's content. Unfortunately, the current mix of tech, politics, and random articles I think are funny just is not enough for them. Here are a couple of the complaints I have heard:

No More Cruft

I had to completely reinstall WordPress (which took less than half an hour in total), but everything works now. If you notice anything broken, feel free to leave a comment.

Here there be AdSense

This website now includes AdSense ads, currently located at the bottom of the page. I may change its location to make it more prominent, but I do not expect to make any significant amount of money, so it is not a major concern.

All Sorts of Bloggy Goodness

I could have (and probably should have) spent the last two hours or so doing homework, but I wasted it away making changes here. Among the things that now work:

The sidebar (that list of links on the right) no longer appears below the footer (that blue bar on the bottom). This was only apparent if [...]

Expiration and Resurrection

If you tried to access this site (or its many RSS feeds) recently, you probably received a lookup error. "Oh my goodness," you must have thought, "Martey has decided to stop blogging." At this point, your eyes began to mist up. "He did not even say goodbye with a last post. No cryptic hints of [...]

Upgrades

Upgraded to WordPress 1.5. Since I had already done of the hard work when I switched to a beta build late last month, the upgrade was ridiculously easy.
So I decided to make it harder, by moving the blog into the root directory of the site. As a result, you can now access the blog at [...]

Yet Another Upgrade

To celebrate the end of final exams (at least for me), I upgraded to a nightly build of Wordpress. I do not really like everything about this Kubrick theme (non-liquid layout, the title header is too big), so expect some more minor changes.

Title Change

Switching it up a bit.

A Christmas Eve Surprise

Sometime yesterday evening, I loaded this blog into my browser. Instead of the soothing grey and navy design, I found the following text:
:)

My first thought was that the server had somehow gone down, and that this was some sort of replacement page (albeit not a very informative one). When I found that I was able to [...]

Oops

I am not sure why I did not notice the problem that caused only one post and the right sidebar to show up (perhaps I uploaded an older version of index.php?), but I fixed the problem.

Blog Upgrade

I am currently upgrading from Wordpress 1.3 alpha to Wordpress 1.2.1. Bear with me.
UPDATE: Done, I think.

Installing TrueType Fonts on Linux

The "corefonts" package makes installing Windows fonts like Verdana on Linux systems easy. However, the corefonts ebuild does not include Tahoma, the font used in Windows XP buttons, menus, and dialogs. As a result, I decided to install them manually.
The fonts will not be recognized unless special files exist in the directory. To make these [...]

Minor Redesign

I changed the layout in order to decrease the length of pages. I added a new toolbar at the right to contain the blogroll (from which several links have been removed) and reduced the number of items in the "recent posts" and the "recent comments" sections.

Yet Another Post About Linux

Earlier this morning, I realized that I was disappointed in the mileage that I was getting out of Linux. I decided that I had a number of options:

Quit: Backup all of my data, format the drive, and reinstall Windows, living the cruel but beautiful world of Linux behind forever.
Start Over: Backup all of [...]

Xor: July Statistics

General
Unique visitors: 809
Average number of (non-unique) visits per day: 103.77
Most popular day: 28 July 2004 (see Search Queries)

Images

As you can see from the previous post, I have learned how to make inline images with CSS (it was actually quite simple; I just never remembered to look it up). Since images seem to brighten up the page, I will continue to use them.

Back!

Sorry about that. Moving took longer than I expected. We were supposed to get cable internet on July 3, but did not.

Back

I have not posted during the last couple of days because I was moving marteydodoo.com to a new web host. This move has fixed the problem with incoming trackbacks.
While waiting for the DNS settings to be updated, I took the opportunity to change some things.

Manually cleaned up the WordPress MySQL database, which was quite messy [...]

Trackback Woes

Incoming Trackback pings do not seem to be working. I am not feeling well right now, so I will look at it tomorrow morning.

Welcome to WordPress

While most normal people were asleep, I was migrating the blog to WordPress. The new structure is going to take some getting used to, though. It took me a long time, but I believe that all of the old MovableType links should work, thanks to some mod_rewrite magic.
Either way, I am going to change some [...]

Reports of my Death Have Been Greatly Exaggerated

One would think that since exams are over for me, I would be posting more. Since I have not, you might be wondering how have I been occupying myself, in these waning days of the school year?

listening to Franz Ferdinand, especially the songs "Dark of the Matinee" and "Auf Acshe"
reading various blogs (the list of [...]

New Model Rifles

Interesting article on military.com (courtesy of Engadget) about a possible replacement for the M-16 series of rifles. Made by Heckler & Koch, the modular design of the XM-8 (interchangeable barrels!) makes a perfect weapon for any modernized army. And it just plain looks futuristic, like something out of Starship Troopers. Alas, the guns in that [...]

The World is Quiet Here

There might not be any posts up here for a while; I am currently trying to simultaneously keep up with schoolwork and do some Windows programming (it has been much too long…). I will still be reading blogs (there are too many in my OPML for me to stop without falling horribly behind), but [...]

This Time, I Mean It

Traveling to New Jersey today. Check for new posts sometime this weekend.

First Post

…on this website, that is. There were some minor hitches in the moving process (from editing mt-dbpass.cgi instead of mt-db-pass.cgi, causing MySQL authentication problems, to my power supply making strange noises that disappeared after I shutdown my computer and waited for an hour), but they have been overcome. Took the opportunity to update [...]

The 411

Following the lead of other blogosphere luminaries, marteydodoo.com has been registered. This blog will be moving there, sometime after the DNS propagation.

Après moi…

Prepare for multiple blog entries. During the past few days, I have been deluged (bad pun) with work, so I have been saving hyperlinks left and right. Expect at least two articles from Le Monde, a number of random blog entries, and maybe even a rant about the Crimson.
UPDATE: going to dinner now. [...]

We Moved

… to the Frog server at the Harvard Computing Society. It is running FreeBSD. Trackback works. Comments work.
I have not been this happy since Clark squeezed out ahead of Edwards in New Hampshire. Oh wait…that was barely two days ago…

Upon Comments

It has come to my attention that posting comments causes a 500 error. The comment is still posted, so just ignore this.

On the Title of this Blog

At some point sometime in the future, when people actually read this blog (yes, I know people stop by every now and then), I will receive a message from some stranger, asking "wtf is xor?!" Stranger, this entry is for you.

Freedom

I have been busy the past few days with an exam, an end-of-semester project, three papers, and my nineteenth birthday. I do not really have anything to do until the 23th, so expect more blogging than has been done over the past few days.

customization

The FAS server can be a bit temperamental. When I try rebuilding any pages or posting new entries, I would get an error about not finding "auto/Digest/MD5/new.al".
Took me a while, but I was able to fix it by installing Digest::MD5 in my extlib directory,as described here.
And now, I will edit my index file to [...]

…and so it begins…

Had it not been for LiveJournal, I probably would have started blogging earlier. The important thing is that I am here now, I guess. Hopefully this will not denigrate into some childish rants about politics, religion, and other random topics.
This entry would be longer, but I still have that paper for tutorial hanging [...]
