Walking home from work, I was standing at the intersection waiting for the light to change when the car swerved out of its lane and faced directly toward me, only a few feet away. For a second, I was sure that it was The Car, the one that would jump onto the sidewalk and mow me down, crushing my life underneath its steel chassis, heedless of the cosmic disruption that this would cause. Knowing that I could never reach the other side of the only nearby obstacle (a traffic light) before being cruelly slaughtered, I stared into the car, wanting to see my killers' faces. Just as my own face betrayed my confusion at the fact they refused to meet my eyes, the car completed its U-turn and went on its way.
