Upgrading to WordPress 2.0

Despite my apprehensions about it, upgrading to WordPress 2.0 was relatively easy. I went through the precaution of creating a test blog, only to find that the ViewLevel plugin worked fine.

For some strange reason, WordPress would not let me upgrade until I disabled Brian's Threaded Comments. Once that was accomplished, I only had to patch wp-db.php again to get Unicode characters to display properly and edit my .htaccess to remove the changes that WordPress had made, which prevented me from accessing my RSS aggregator.

What do I think? The administration section looks a lot nicer. Even though I have disabled the rich text editor, writing posts is still a joy with the new preview (which actually uses your site's themes and plugins now). I am trying Akismet. I am still thinking about changing themes, but I have not run across anything I like yet.

Some further thoughts:

  1. I have now upgraded WordPress three times, on three different websites. Each time I have had different issues.
  2. I am fairly certain that the ViewLevel plugin only still works either because I am using it for relatively simple purposes - to block unregistered users, or because magically, it is the one "view level" type plugin that does not make calls to the user_level function. I could find out which is which by taking a look at the source code, but I am slightly afraid that doing so will break it somehow.
  3. You are supposed to disable your plugins when upgrading WordPress.
  4. That Unicode thing is annoying. Since it seems to be affecting a fair amount of foreign WordPress users, I am probably going to look into submitting a bug to WordPress. This is a roundabout way to say that the process of registering an account and writing up a descriptive enough ticket seems horribly taxing to me right now.
  5. The Administration section looks absolutely amazing. When I wandered into the Admin section of a WordPress 1.5.2 blog, I literally cringed at the difference. Everything looked so gray and bland!
  6. Akismet is okay, but not great. I might post about it.
