Josh Aas writes that Macalester College has switched to Firefox in its computer labs. I can only imagine what it would mean for Firefox usage at Harvard if it became the official browser in our computer labs. As DrunkenBatman notes on his post about Microsoft Office (see the section on "Interface"), users get attached to the applications that they are comfortable with. By removing Internet Explorer from lab computers, FASCS would be sending the message that, like the Outlook family of email clients, Internet Explorer is not the best choice among the multitude of web browsers currently available. Even now, the two Knowledge Base articles describing spyware (here and here) do not mention that usage of Internet Explorer may contribute to the problem.

Update: Neil reports that the University of Bradford in the UK has installed Firefox on its Windows computers.
