I think ease of upgrade depends on how much you have edited the files that come with WordPress. In order to upgrade, I extracted all of the WordPress 1.2.1 files onto my desktop and compared them to my local mirror of the WordPress 1.3alpha files hosted on my blog. After making several manual changes to the WordPress 1.2.1 files, I replaced the blog with the files on my desktop. Then I had to find the changes that I had missed the first time around.
Actually, I have still not gotten the alternating comments (where one is grey, and the next is white) style working again (except on the comments preview page). I would like to do a more comprehensive redesign, but have not had time yet.
