Back

It has been a busy couple of weeks. I wanted to post, but never had enough time to properly flesh out the topics that I wanted to write about. While it would be impossible (and dangerous) for me to maintain summer levels of activity, I am going to try to write at least once a [...]

One State?

While I find Michael Tarazi's rhetoric a bit extreme (i.e. his use of the word "colonies" to describe the settlements, which conflicts with his later claim that Israel and the Palestinian terrorities are already a single de facto state), I think the future of the peace process may be an "one state solution." While I [...]

Blog Upgrade

I am currently upgrading from Wordpress 1.3 alpha to Wordpress 1.2.1. Bear with me.
UPDATE: Done, I think.

Digital Photography

I have purchased a digital camera. Despite the two-day shipping, the SD memory card I ordered has still not arrived (although it was sent "out for delivery" yesterday morning); limiting the capacity to 16 "medium-size" pictures. Of course, it is a 3 megapixel camera, so "medium-size" pictures are 2048×1536, which is a higher resolution than [...]

Happy Ramadan from Norristown

A strange text message on my cell phone:
Message From
484-919-####
Ramadan
Mubarak!!!
10/15/04 12:16 am
The phone number resolves to Norristown, Pennsylvania's exchange. While, as I have written earlier, my cell phone number belonged to a young man named Carmine, I assume (based on his name and on the people who call him) that he does not celebrate Ramadan. Once [...]

Securing Mail

This Crimson article about professors who do not use e-mail seemed like normal fare until I read this paragraph:
Orchard Professor in the History of Landscape John R. Stilgoe doesn?t use his Harvard address either, but for security reasons. Because e-mails travel through Harvard?s local area network (LAN), messages could end up in the hands of [...]

Oops

I am not sure why I did not notice the problem that caused only one post and the right sidebar to show up (perhaps I uploaded an older version of index.php?), but I fixed the problem.

Wirehog Beta Arrives

Only two months behind its original schedule, a beta version of Wirehog has arrived. Taking a leaf out of Google's book, the beta is invite-only. Based on my experiences with Gmail and Orkut, this means I will not get invited for several months, by which time everyone and their dog will have an account.
The Wirehog [...]

Personalization

Greetings [First_Name],
Thanks for being one of over 5000 youth and students to have signed the Declaration of Independence form Dirty Energy in just 15 days. In less than a month the signatures will be presented to our countries' leaders to tell them that our generation demands a shift to clean, renewable energy. To [...]

Connectivity is in the Eye of the Beholder

This purported list of "America's Most Connected Campuses," (via Slashdot) created by Forbes and the Princeton Review, should be viewed with a grain of salt, as not all of the results are valid. For example, according to the list, Harvard College does not provide students with space for web hosting, does not provide streaming course [...]

Fedora-Redhat is not Redhat's Fedora

Slashdot reports on an attempt to convince users of Redhat Linux and Fedora Core to download and execute malicious code disguised as a security update. Like phishing scams, it seems several spam email messages were sent claiming to be from the "Redhat Security Team," and directing users to www.fedora-redhat.com (the real Fedora website is www.fedora.redhat.com) [...]

The War on Offense, & Other Republican Goals

I have been waiting for my absentee ballot to come, so I was excited to find it in my mailbox today. I was less excited to find letters from the local party organizations congratulating me on my request for an absentee ballot. The Democratic literature was relatively normal, so I will not spend any time [...]

Does Wirehog Exist?

As I expected, I have still not received an invitation to join Wirehog. Nor do I know anyone who has. Even more alarming is the disappearance of the Wirehog website. Were this another company, I would conclude that Wirehog was simply vaporware.
Despite such issues, i2hub seems worried about Wirehog's impact, going as far as registering [...]
